Tyre inspections and the law

The law states that there must, by law, be a depth of at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the centre 3/4 of the width of the tread throughout the entire circumference of the tyre. There must be no damage to the tyre - sidewalls or tread, and no bulges or cuts.
There are tread wear indicators or ‘bumps’ set in the tread in several places around the tyre. These indicators are approximately 1.6mm tall and act as an indication to change your tyres when they become near to level with the rest of the tread. It can sometimes be quite difficult to inspect the tyres on your vehicle. Below is an example of a tyre that had excessive wear on the inside edge without the driver being aware!
